Family of William Swindell
(1810 - 1881)
William Swindell was born in Ireland in 1810 to John and Mary Swindell. In 1821 the family left Ireland and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship called the Ding Superior. At this time William was approximately 11 years old. He was the third of eight children.
The family planned on settling in Ohio once they arrived in America. In the 1840 federal census, we find a William Swindell, with a wife and two children, living in Madison Township in Licking County.
William Swindell married Mehetable Huse in Ohio prior to 1835. They lived in Madison Township where they raised their family. Mehetable was born in 1813 in the state of Maine to James and Betsy Huse. William and Mehetable had nine children born to them that made it to adulthood. It is not known if other children were born and died at a young age.
William died on 11 April 1881 in Madison Township, Ohio and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark, Ohio. Prior to his death, William purchased a family cemetery plot there, consisting of ten graves. Mehetable preceded William in death on 09 September 1878 in Madison Township, and is also buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery. There is more information on the cemetery in other sections of this site.
